GODSTONE EVENING WI SPECIAL ADDITION NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2020
You thought I had sent my last Newsletter didn’t you? Well there are few things I wanted you all to have the opportunity of knowing.
ORPHEUS
If you have had a lockdown clear out and want to donate your unwanted items The Orpheus Centre are accepting donations of unwanted clothing, old tech, jewellery, books etc on specific dates early December - I think the dates are 7-9th December. For full details ... www.orpheus.org.uk/Event/clearout
It may help as Rosemary Carter cannot take any items at the moment because the St Catherine’s warehouse is shut.
AIR AMBULANCE
I have received the Christmas Draw raffle tickets with a first prize of £5,000. The tickets as always are £1 each and there are 10 in a book. Please let me know if you would like to take part and I will bring the tickets to you. The closing date is 14 December and the draw takes place on 23 December.
BAY POND CHRISTMAS STARS
For those not on Facebook, St Nicholas Church is planning to link Godstone to the church with stars to bring a festive feel to the village. Anyone who feels able to make starts from knitting, crochet, felt or paint wooden stars in red green which gold or silver please join in. No smaller than 8cm in diameter (although perhaps 12ccm is better) and they have to survive the winter weather. Finished stars can be dropped off at The Rectory, 17 Ivy Mill Lane. Helen, the Vicar’s wife Helen has suggested a knitting pattern
GODSTONE VILLAGE XMAS MARKET
Also there is the above named market on Facebook which states:
If you can't get to the shops to buy Christmas presents then you can try our Godstone online market place, which has just been launched! Just contact through the Market page.

LIGHT UP YOUR STREET
A reminder about hanging or sticking Christmas stars/decorations on your house front windows, leaving the curtains open and your lights on so that these can be seen!
SPARE LIGHT BULBS
Mary Stuart-Menteth has spare bulbs for Christmas lights – not LEDs. Please contact her if you need any as she does not want to just throw them away.
ANNUAL MEETING
An email will be sent out with an Agenda and other papers ready for this meeting.
Best wishes Moira

GODSTONE EVENING - NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2020
This is the last Newsletter that you will receive from me!! After quite a few years as your President, and even more years on the Committee I am stepping down at the Annual Meeting.
SCIENCE TALK ON 30 SEPT
If you log onto the Surrey WI News which Sarah has circulated the link for, you will find my write up about the talk Prof. Trevor Jones gave on pages 7 and 8. They have included the lovely comments I received from many WI members over Surrey. So those of you who did not attend can read all about it if you want.
WEDNESDAY 28 OCTOBER – FORMAL MEETING
Hilary Strong gave us a run down on how her career in the theatre world started as a dresser at Chichester Theatre, progressed to being appointed director of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to creating Making Theatre Gaining Skills, a training centre. She suggested our WI might like to go and attend the Fringe Festival!!
Perhaps an outing for 2021!
25 NOVEMBER – ANNUAL MEETING
This meeting will have to take place on zoom, obviously, particularly now in view of the forthcoming lockdown measures. It would be helpful if you could let Sarah Brindle know if you will not be attending.
Those who are standing for re-election onto the committee are: Anita, Sarah Parker, Paula, Penny and Janice – both myself and Sarah Brindle are standing down. If you want to vote for these 5 members to be re-elected onto the Committee then just email Sarah Brindle with your confirmation. If you want to nominate yourself or anyone else to be elected on to the committee, then please send such nominations to Sarah Brindle. Any new nominations will then be circulated to you and you will be asked to vote for or against and email Sarah accordingly. Once the new Committee have been voted on, then the position of President is to be voted from the members of the new Committee and this is a secret ballot. Details of how this secret ballot will take place will be emailed to you before the Meeting, together with what will happen at the meeting.
WEEKLY WEDNESDAY MEETINGS
You will be advised of these as and when they are to occur but I can say there will be a craft evening coming up.
The Committee hope that all of you are keeping well and hope to see you joining in on these zoom meetings and in particular for the Annual Meeting.
Moira and the Committee.

GODSTONE EVENING WI NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2020
WEDNESDAY 23 SEPTEMBER – FORMAL MEETING
What a great speaker Judy Theobald was – so entertaining and funny. Had me in stitches. We will have to have her back for another of her talks.
WEDNESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER – SCIENCE TALK
Prof. Trevor Jones gave an excellent talk on ’Infectious diseases (including Coronavirus) – are we winning the battle’. The presentation was very well done and easy to follow and Trevor (whom I know personally) was very professional. The editor of SWIN has asked me to give a write up for the next edition of the News so you can read about it in that, presumably the November edition, on line.
SATURDAY 17 OCTOBER -ST CATHERINE’S COFFEE MORNING
As you know we had to cancel the first one due to change in the rules!! I know I mentioned Saturday 10th October but on reflection to give us more time to organise it, this virtual Coffee Morning will be on Saturday 17th October at 11am. Anita will be sending out details of how you buy a ticket for this ‘event’ and that ticket will include one raffle ticket. We will have quite a lot of raffle prizes and these will all be shown on the zoom screen. All profits to go to St Catherine’s Hospice. (If anyone has a raffle prize to donate please let a committee member know and we can arrange collection, or you can take it to my house.
28 OCTOBER – FORMAL MEETING
We have a speaker for our October Meeting and she is Hillary Strong and her talk is entitled ‘Dresser to Trainer (36 years of making theatre)’. Sarah will send you the usual email about this in due course.
ANNUAL MEETING – 25 NOVEMBER
I am mentioning this important meeting again which will be held on zoom. Please consider very carefully about joining the committee. Not every current committee member is going to stand for re-election so we are looking for nominations!! More on this to come.
WEEKLY WEDNESDAY MEETINGS
You will be advised of these as and when they are to occur.
The Committee hope that all of you are keeping well and hope to see you joining in on these zoom meetings and the Coffee Morning. Any problems please contact a committee member.

NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2020
WEEKLY MEETINGS
Anita is continuing with the weekly zoom meetings and you have details from her already about tomorrow.
WEDNESDAY 26 AUGUST - BOULES
Do come and play Boulle on The Green – at 6pm – weather permitting!
Bring your own picnic and any soft drinks and glass. Pims and Prosecco will be provided. I also have two sets of boules but if any of you have a set please bring it along as obviously we want to have our own pair to play with. I will be providing hand sanitizer and wipes. Bring your own chair or blanket as the wooden seat will only take 2 people distancing. This has always been a fun evening in the past so we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. There is plenty of room to keep social distancing.
As many of you know I am selling raffle tickets for Air Ambulance and I will have them with me if you would like to buy with a chance to win £5,000. The draw is on 29th September.
WHITE HART BARN
I am in close contact with the White Hart Barn Committee regarding returning to the hall for our monthly meetings. Unfortunately at the moment only 20 people are allowed in the hall, with social distancing of 2 metres and the kitchen is only available for water. The garden is available in our hire but I think by September 23rd the evenings will be dark although it could still be very warm – so that is something for the Committee to discuss and we will let you know.
A reminder that St Catherine’s Hospice shop is now open for any items you want to pass on (Rosemary Carter is the contact), or The Voice for any baby or mother items (Sue Dowling is that contact).
In addition at Café Connect recently, I met a couple of ladies involved in running The Hygiene Bank. This has been set up to help poor families - quote
At The Hygiene Bank, we believe each and every one of us should have a dignified life. It's not right that feeling clean should be a luxury or a privilege for anyone in our society, yet many of us are living in poverty and can't afford to be clean.
Look up the website: www.thehygienebank.com
The items they desperately need include: toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo/conditioner, shower gel, razors, shaving foam, deodorant, hairbrush, nit comb/shampoo, sanitary products, nappies, baby wipes, toilet roll and laundry detergent. If you have any unwanted items/presents falling into these categories, bring them along or you can bring them to my house.
The recycling centre at Caterham is now open but accepting black bag and green waste only.
The Committee hope that all of you are keeping well and hope to see you joining in on these zoom meetings.
Moira and the Committee.

NEXT FORMAL MONTHLY MEETING – Wednesday 22 JULY
Sarah Brindle will be emailing you with details of this meeting when there will be a virtual speaker by zoom. The speaker this time is 100 years old! He has led an extraordinary life and his talk will be very interesting.
We hope all of those of you who live alone have enjoyed meeting up with other members at the recently held coffee mornings or afternoon teas.
Now that more of us can meet up, particularly in open spaces, I am hoping to still hold the annual game of Boulle on Godstone Green in August as shown on the Programme (Wednesday 26) at say 6pm and bring your own picnic. The Godstone Fete has been cancelled this year.
The Committee are also suggesting walks such as a gentle walk; a 1 hour Circular walk, or even a ramble/hike. These walks will not be led as such by anyone but it will be open to members to suggest walks in their category. There will be no set timetable and the walks will be announced in a newsletter.
The Committee hope that all of you are keeping well and hope to see you joining in on these zoom meetings. As to when we will get into the White Hart Barn for a get together – time will tell!
Moira and the Committee.

NEWSLETTER APRIL 2020------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GODSTONE EVENING WI NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2020
GODSTONE EVENING WI NEWSLETTER DEC 2019
For those of you who did not come, the existing committee members all agreed
to stand for a further year so the Secretary is Sarah Brindle, Treasurer
Sarah Parker and Moira White as your President. However, in addition I am delighted to say
Janice Baker and Penny Jones agreed to join us on the committee which is
great, and Anita Black has agreed to be Vice-President.

Following the meeting Sarah Parker demonstrated how we could all make
robins as shown in the photo. Every one seemed to have a fun time making
these and there were some very good results.
Many thanks to Sarah for organising this and the demonstration. Many more people turned up than had
informed Sarah Brindle which caused a bit of chaos but it was great to see so
many members, including one new one, Elaine and visitors.
This was the last meeting in the Baptist Church Hall and as from
January 2020 meetings will take place in the White Hart Barn. The 2020
Programme was available at the meeting but you will also find it on our
website.

What a
lovely time we all had at our last meeting with Tim Fisher and his
demonstrations of chocolate lollypops and macrons which we all enjoyed
eating! A lovely person passionate
about what he does. Several of us are
going to go to one of his courses in January and if you would like to be
included, please let me know. You can
look on his website at the courses: www.timspastryclub.com
